672 Spammer in the slammer Monday, March 3, 2008 [1] [2]
Jeremy Jaynes has been sentenced to nine years in prison for trying to sell you Viagra. OK, I really don't know if it was Viagra, but he was a spammer, and he got sentenced to jail time. I guess he's the first spammer to get canned. We also talk about Wikileaks getting its domain name back, pirates cracking Vista, and Woz critiquing the line of Apple products.
673 Offline is the new online Tuesday, March 4, 2008 [3] [4]
Google Gears is the project that allows online apps to be used even when you don't have an Internet connection. Microsoft is apparently making noises about Silverlight being used offline as well. So apparently offline is really hip again. Good for it! Plus I get nailed with a pricing analogy, and we decide Alex is the new anonymous.
674 Pomme not Pom Wednesday, March 5, 2008 [5] [6]
On today's episode, we have a little misunderstanding vis-a-vis the French language, and also there's some tech news. Specifically, Yahoo might be plotting a way to become the biggest tech giant of them all, some CEOs get serious with the smack-talk, and Ask.com becomes Molly's own personal search engine. Aw, that's sweet.
675 Can I pay cash for that? Thursday, March 6, 2008 [7] [8]
Microsoft considers switching its bid for Yahoo to all cash. Why? Because they have a lot of cash. Bill Gates, on the other hand, is practically a pauper, at least according to Forbes' annual billionaire list. In other news, the MPAA turns out to have made record revenues in 2007, erasing any and all sympathy anyone might have left for them.
676 Don't lecture me Friday, March 7, 2008 [9] [10]
We try to cool it on the proselytizing, while also keeping the iPhone SDK hype to a minimum. Both tasks are incredibly hard. In other news today, the Air Force is going to take charge of the Internet, using the sacred "six Ds" principle. Look out!
677 HD VMD FTW 2.0 Monday, March 10, 2008 [11] [12]
HD VMD is making its mainstream debut as the next NEXT-generation high-def DVD format. We're tired of war. But we like the low prices, yes, we do. In other tech news today, the Beatles may finally be coming to iTunes (for real this time) and the TSA doesn't believe the MacBook Air is a real laptop.
678 Buzzkill Tuesday Tuesday, March 11, 2008 [13] [14]
Hulu's coming Wednesday! Ars Technica says it's lame. Beatles on iTunes! Michael Jackson says no. Sprint's superfast data for HTC Mogul only. Get the picture? In other bummer news, Tom's on an airplane, but the good news is that the good ship Jollycast covers nicely. Uh. We hope.
679 Un-hack my Heart Wednesday, March 12, 2008 [15] [16]
Hackers have figured out how to hack devices implanted into human hearts. This makes us think, nee demand, that a Jonathan Coulton song and XKCD comic should take up this theme. Plus the hackers aren't done with you yet. They've already hacked iPhone 2.0 software before it's even released. You go clever hackers! Just hands off my heart.
680 Wherein Rafe explains Thursday, March 13, 2008 [17] [18]
Rafe Needleman joins us today for a rant on the MPAA, an explanation of basic economics, musings on mergers in the video game industry, and managing write times for solid-state hard drives. Jason and I sit back and bask.
681 Pi Not Pie Friday, March 14, 2008 [19] [20]
Today is March 14, also known as Pi day, and all we can think about is celebrating by eating large amounts of apple pie. Verizon seems to be warming up to peer-to-peer technology, and the music industry is proposing a monthly fee for Internet service providers to offset the cost of piracy. Do you think the RIAA deserves a slice?
682 The murder of CableCARD Monday, March 17, 2008 [21] [22]
TiVo copy protection strikes at the very heart of CableCARD ... and, uh, TiVo. So, maybe they should reconsider going along with that whole HBO lockdown plan, eh? We also learn about how Hulu, Phorm, BT, Google, and everyone else on earth is tracking down all our personal information all the time. Bummer. Featuring Randall Bennett from CNET's The 404 podcast. Enjoy all 55 minutes (hey, I warned you!).
683 Will you marry me? Tuesday, March 18, 2008 [23] [24]
Well we did something we may regret. We allowed a caller to propose on the show. It was sweet, but then we found out it wasn't even the first proposal from that guy to Kristin. Anyway, other than romantic moments, we also had a lot of flash drive discussion, some economic lessons on volume-selling, and a spate of Microsoft news.
684 Dude, it's not Dell Wednesday, March 19, 2008 [25] [26]
Dell heard the supposition that they might have a high rate of returns on solid state drives and came out swinging. Nuh-uh! sums up their response. Amazon once again correctly leaked a product release date. How do they get away with that? And of course the 700 MHz spectrum auction is over. Did you win? Let us know!
685 Do Androids Dream? Thursday, March 20, 2008 [27] [28]
HTC has subtly referenced Phil Dick by naming their forthcoming Android phone Dream. But is it a replicate? We'll never know. And of course Google is crumbling because their search traffic grew. You heard that right. We'll explain that theory and attempt to debunk it on the show.
686 Muselix of podcasts Friday, March 21, 2008 [29] [30]
Veronica's back, and we do spend quite a bit of time talking about DRM, patent law, the 700 MHz wireless spectrum auction winners and other tech topics. However we finished on someting of a low note regarding fiber.
687 ByeMax Monday, March 24, 2008 [31] [32]
I think we're going to have to call WiMax dead. After all, the CEO of a WiMax network said it's a "disaster." Ouch. In other news, Sony decided it's not cool to charge $50 to get rid of something you never wanted to begin with, Comcast maybe does and maybe doesn't want to put a camera in your set-top box, and Tom's gonna win himself an X Prize.
688 I like your photos Tuesday, March 25, 2008 [33] [34]
I like that photo of you that you posted on Facebook. You know, the private one? Yeah. I saw it. It was pretty cool, although I'd never wear that T-shirt again if I were you. In other news, Netflix DVDs are coming late! The end of the world is nigh! Also, the DOJ approves the XM-Sirius merger and Sony BMG wants to get on your iPod in a decidedly nonrootkit way.
689 Mousetronauts Wednesday, March 26, 2008 [35] [36]
Please, someone, make a Mousetronauts show. We're begging you. In other news, cell phones on airplanes appear to be coming to European airspace near you. Comcast and Time Warner are lining up behind WiMax, and South Park is coming online -- for free!
690 Your stupidity saves dogs Thursday, March 27, 2008 [37] [38]
The combination of foolish corporate admins and folks who don't read very well actually help save animals. It's a story about do not reply--and it's a good one. In other news, Comcast and BitTorrent reach a surprising deal that benefits both of them. We're boggled, as well.
691 The Babies Have Wi-Fi Friday, March 28, 2008 [39] [40]
In the future, we will love the cockroaches, because they bring the Wi-Fi. Sadly, autonomous deathbots will make life unliveable, and that's assuming the Large Hadron Collider hasn't turned us all into strangelets. In happier news, the music industry is floating a plan to tax everyone who uses the Internet so they can prop up the decaying corpse of their business plan! What a fun day.
692 Shine on, Chumby Monday, March 31, 2008 [41] [42]
Chumby is the wave of the future, Shine is...shiny? And tomorrow is Molly's Day Without Google--and maybe yours, too. In other news, if you can call it that, Adobe Systems changes its Photoshop Express terms of service, while the rest of the Internet keeps theirs the same.
