464 Dell picks Ubuntu Tuesday, May 1, 2007 [1] [2]
Dell has picked the Linux distro that it's going to offer in its computers, and it's Ubuntu! Lucky for us, because that's definitely the most fun word to say ever.
465 Digg my grave Wednesday, May 2, 2007 [3] [4]
Yesterday, thousands of Digg users flooded the site with postings containing the hex code that can be used to decrypt HD DVD disks. At first Kevin Rose and the boys tried to comply with a takedown notice but eventually threw up their hands and in Kevin's words, "If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying." No further word yet from the Toshiba camp. In the meantime, 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 and so on and so on is pretty much everywhere on the Web today, thanks to the efforts to censor it.
466 Fightin' Harry McCracken Thursday, May 3, 2007 [5] [6]
An editor from PC World has resigned over ad pressure--it's sad that it came to that, but we're happy he stood up and kept his integrity. Plus, I get to make "Ask a Ninja" jokes at the expense of his last name.
467 Microhoo? Yahoocrosoft? Merger? Friday, May 4, 2007 [7] [8]
Could the news be true? Is there really going to be a $50 billion merger between these two tech giants? It's frighteningly possible!
468 AT&T mean to VoIP users Tuesday, May 8, 2007 [9] [10]
AT&T, why do you have to be so mean to your customers? Taking away their VoIP, but not letting them give forwarding numbers and not helping them keep their own personal number when they switch services? Cold-hearted, man. Just cold.
469 No ID, no CD Tuesday, May 8, 2007 [11] [12]
The state of Florida wants to require you to present an ID and a fingerprint in order to sell your used CDs! I don't know what kind of operation you're running, but I sell all my copied CDs on eBay, where the big money is.
470 'Spores' in space Thursday, May 10, 2007 [13] [14]
The game Spore is clearly a representation of what's going to happen when our bacteria land on a habitable planet. Too bad we won't know how to protect ourselves yet because the game is delayed.
471 Smaller is better Thursday, May 10, 2007 [15] [16]
We don't have fiber (unlike some people), but if a certain senator gets elected, then all that might change! We'll just continue to whine about it until it does.
472 Super-happy-fun-turbo podcast Friday, May 11, 2007 [17] [18]
You can call DRM whatever you want, but it's still the same thing- -seriously, it's not an "image issue." Stick around for the end of the podcast for "bunnies made of cheese."
473 Microsoft vs. the free world Monday, May 14, 2007 [19] [20]
Microsoft is taking on open source, but we're not entirely sure why. Could it be jealousy, or the innate need to crush all competition? Turn away from the dark side, Microsoft!
474 The thrill of open source Tuesday, May 15, 2007 [21] [22]
Today is another day about patents and copyright, so if that bores you then you might want to skip to all the new product announcements! Nothing too earth-shattering there either, but we'll make it exciting, we promise.
475 Amazon goes DRM-free Wednesday, May 16, 2007 [23] [24]
Amazon is going to offer DRM-free songs from 12,000 labels in the future. We're hoping that more major labels other than EMI will hop on board, but it's a great start! Now they have to work on Unbox.
476 iPhone rumor causes uproar Thursday, May 17, 2007 [25] [26]
Engadget's posting of an internal Apple e-mail caused quite a stir in the blogosphere--and the stock-o-sphere--yesterday. Listen in to find out why Veronica can't talk about it!
477 Alpha is the new beta Friday, May 18, 2007 [27] [28]
Microsoft is coming out with a very Web 2.0-style product called Popfly, and it's in alpha testing right now. That makes it even more cool, because beta is, like, so played out these days.
478 Optimus primed for pre-orders Monday, May 21, 2007 [29] [30]
* In the podcast this was reported as episode 477
No, we're not talking Transformers! But it is an awesome keyboard that changes, depending on your needs. Say, for example, that you want to have a custom setup for the new Starcraft II!
479 I'm in mah car, stealin' yr Wi-Fi Tuesday, May 22, 2007 [31] [32]
* In the podcast this was reported as episode 478
Should it be against the law to use Wi-Fi in the comfort of your car? One fellow in Michigan learned the hard way that it is--at least in his situation.
480 Joost gets creative Wednesday, May 23, 2007 [33] [34]
Joost will be working with Creative Artists Agency to bring new content to the service. What will this mean for the middleman? And how will Microsoft's entrance into the IPTV market affect them?
481 The Internet is for taxes Thursday, May 24, 2007 [35] [36]
So you know we couldn't last tax-free on the Net forever, but the ax is coming sooner than I thought. This fall we could see it formalized. Yuck. Meanwhile Bill Gates and Steve Jobs will soon be reenacting the Mac vs. PC commercials in front of a large studio audience.
482 Mulligan! Friday, May 25, 2007 [37] [38]
It's the dawn of a new era, with all three of us in the studio today, as well as new podcast producer Jason! It's Lawsuit Friday, so we have interesting cases about Sony, Nokia, and New Jersey. A great holiday weekend to our listeners here in the States--see you Tuesday!
483 Fill 'er up with cornmeal Tuesday, May 29, 2007 [39] [40]
The future of fuel could be found right in your grocery store, in the form of delicious starch! Also today, our DRM-free tracks on iTunes could be coming this week! Will Tom's prediction finally come true?
484 iTunes DRM-free tracks are here! Wednesday, May 30, 2007 [41] [42]
The waiting is over! The EMI DRM-free tracks are finally available on iTunes today, and Steve Jobs says that he hopes half of all iTunes music will be available by the end of the year. Here's hoping!
485 The spam king of zombies Thursday, May 31, 2007 [43] [44]
An alleged top-10 spammer has been arrested for fraud in Washington. Have you noticed the reduction of spam yet? Didn't think so. We also have a cartload of Apple stories, including a new higher-capacity Apple TV. And Brian says a bad word. We can't take him anywhere.
