The Sword and Laser (S&L) is a science fiction and fantasy-themed book club, started by Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt. The main goal of the club is to build a strong online community of sci-fi / fantasy buffs, and to discuss and enjoy books of both genres.
To chose a book, several ideas are put up to a vote. The winner becomes the book of the month that is discussed on the forums at certain intervals (such as every three chapters).
The website also mentions the possibility of a S&L podcast and meetups.

Would anyone be interested in starting a sci-fi/fantasy book club? Vote for a book each month, read, and then discuss? I've been wanting to start one for a while, but I'd need help.[1]
OK, so we're going to do this book club. Got any good names for the club that you want to throw out there? I'll put the best ones up to a vote.[2]
The book club name is going to be called The Sword and Laser. I'll get the page set up, and then we'll decide on the first book! Yes, I was going to put the name to a vote, but Tom Merritt came up with this one, and I just love it.[3]
